Each style is built around a different kind of work, and the right one depends on what you actually do in the saddle most days. Here’s a plain-English look at the main styles we build and who each one suits.

Wade saddles

Built for: long days of ranch work, cattle and dallying.

A wade is a classic working cowboy’s saddle. It has a slick or low fork, a tall post horn wrapped for dallying, and a seat that lets you sit close to your horse and move with it all day. Riders who spend hours horseback love how comfortable and secure a good wade feels.

The trade-off has traditionally been weight. That’s why we developed our composite Orthopedic «Assist» trees: our Light Wade comes in at 34 lbs (roping rated to 750 lbs at the horn) and our Ultra-Light Wade at 28 lbs (roping rated to 350 lbs at the horn). Learn more about our Assist trees.

Roping saddles

Built for: team roping, calf roping and heavy ranch roping.

A roping saddle has to take repeated hard jerks at the horn, so it’s built stout with reinforced rigging and a strong horn. The seat is usually designed to let you stand and move freely, and some styles, like a calf roper, are built to make getting off fast easier. If you rope regularly, choose a saddle built for it. A trail or barrel saddle isn’t made for that kind of load.

Barrel saddles

Built for: speed events and riders who want to stay locked in.

Barrel saddles are lighter, with a deeper seat, a higher cantle and a taller horn to grab on tight turns. Shorter, rounded skirts give the horse more freedom to bend and turn. They’re also popular with riders who like a secure, close-contact seat for pleasure riding.

Trail saddles

Built for: pleasure riding and long miles on the trail.

Trail saddles focus on comfort for both horse and rider over long hours. Expect a comfortable seat, a lighter build, and plenty of places to tie on gear. If most of your riding is outside an arena and you’re not roping, a trail saddle is often the most practical choice.

How to choose

Be honest about what you do most. Buy for the riding you do every week, not the riding you do once a year.

Think about weight. If lifting a heavy saddle onto a tall horse is a struggle, look at lighter builds, like our Assist tree wades or a barrel or trail saddle.

Check the fit for both of you. Seat size has to fit you and the tree has to fit your horse. See our guides to seat size and tree fit, plus our Guía de tallas and Armazones de montura pages.

Warranty by style

Because each style is used differently, our warranty periods differ too: 5 years on roping saddles, 8 years on wade saddles, and 10 years on barrel, trail and Old Timer saddles. See our Garantía page for full details.

Ready to look?

Browse what’s available now on our Tienda page. If you’re torn between styles, email us at saddlegear@gmail.com and tell us how you ride.
